I first learned of the Pussy Hat Project through my local knit shop in Chicago, Knit 1. The shop was hosting knit-ins and taking donations of hats made by others as well as distributing them to those who didn't knit. It was beyond inspiring to see all this knitting for a purpose, people donating their time and energy toward the goal of filling the Women's March in Washington, DC and around the country with a sea of pink. I went to the DC march with my daughter and a couple friends, all sporting hats I knitted. We joined the masses to protest and to unite with this global community. It reminded me what grass roots organizing and a LOT of pink yarn can do! I'd been to marches before but there was something about the all-inclusive nature of this one that felt especially exhilarating.
When I returned I kept thinking about what I had experienced and what I could do as a maker to not only create something new but to find a way to give back. PussyPower jewelry was born to keep the spirit going and help power the engines that create positive change in people's lives. Cast in sterling silver or bronze, these pieces represent a call to action. 20% of the profits from the sale of this line of jewelry will be donated to groups dedicated to women’s rights, women’s health, LGBTQ+ rights, gender equality, racial equality and other organizations that promote human rights.
